Běh pro Paměť národa
V květnovém Běhu pro Paměť národa (www.behpropametnaroda.cz) poběžíme za všechny, kteří se nevzdali. Připomeneme si ty, kteří bojovali proti totalitám v minulosti, i ty, kteří za svobodu bojují dnes. Letos poběžím za Jana Zahradníčka a Viktoriji Amelinovou. Už teď ale vím, že jejich čas neporazím.
In the Run for the Memory of Nations (www.behpropametnaroda.cz) we will run for all those who have not given up. We will remember those who fought against totalitarianism in the past and those who fight for freedom today. This year I will run for Jan Zahradníček and Victoria Amelina. But I already know I can't beat their time.

Jan Zahradníček (1905-1960)
Československý básník a překladatel. Po zatčení v roce 1951 a vykonstruovaném procesu s římskokatolickými literáty byl odsouzen na třináct let do vězení. Po účasti na pohřbu svých dvou dcer se musel do věznice vrátit. Teprve po amnestii v roce 1960 byl propuštěn. Krátce na to zemřel v Uhřínově, kde rodina od jeho zatčení měla přikázaný pobyt. Příčinou smrti byla srdeční choroba, která se během pobytu ve vězení silně zhoršila – jednak kvůli krutému zacházení, jednak proto, že mu byly odepřeny léky.

Jan Zahradníček (1905-1960)
Czechoslovak poet and translator. After his arrest in 1951 and a mock trial of Roman Catholic writers, he was sentenced to thirteen years in prison. After attending the funeral of his two daughters, he had to return to prison. Only after an amnesty in 1960 was he released. Shortly afterwards he died in Uhřínov, where the family had been ordered to stay since his arrest. The cause of his death was a heart disease that had worsened severely during his stay in prison - both because of the cruel treatment and because he had been denied medication.

Viktorija Amelinová (1986-2023)
Ukrajinská spisovatelka, držitelka literární ceny Josepha Conrada. Po roce 2022 spolupracovala s ukrajinskými týmy dokumentujícími ruské válečné zločiny v souvislosti s invazí na Ukrajinu, hostila vnitřně vysídlené spoluobčany a pomáhala s humanitárními dodávkami ve Lvově. Zemřela v červenci 2023 na následky zranění po ruském raketovém útoku na restauraci ve městě Kramatorsk. Zanechala po sobě dvanáctiletého syna.
Victoria Amelin (1986-2023)
Ukrainian writer, winner of the Joseph Conrad Literary Prize. After 2022, she worked with Ukrainian teams documenting Russian war crimes in connection with the invasion of Ukraine, hosted internally displaced citizens, and helped with humanitarian supplies in Lviv. On 27 June 2023, she was injured during the Russian attack on Kramatorsk while she was dining at the restaurant. Amelina died due to her injuries on 1 July at the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro at the age of 37. She left behind a 12-year-old son.
